Wine cellars are not just for those completely committed to the full enjoyment of fine wine, the use of a wine cellar is necessity. Wine cellars are used to store wine under its most ideal conditions. Most home wine cellars are designed to store individual bottles of wine or groups of multiple bottles of wine at the proper temperature and humidity. Although most large-scale wine cellars are located below ground the advent of the refrigerated wine cellar allows them to be part of any room in your house.
The term wine cellar usually refers to storage rooms capable of storing over 500 bottles of wine while areas or devices to store less than 500 bottles of wine are referred to as "wine closets" or home wine cellars. A feature to wine cellars that is common is that they are often built directly on the ground or will have a small gap in the foundation to balance the humidity.
Proper storage of wine requires some special conditions to prolong the wines natural life. These include a location that does not get any sunlight, as sunlight is harmful to the wine. Another key feature to the wine cellar is its ability to maintain a proper and constant temperature one of the leading causes of wine going bad. Red wine will generally benefit more from the aging process than white wine. Most red wines do not even get released for sale until they are 2 years old or more. Wine if not storied properly can turn to vinegar or go bad so proper storage is a must.
Many wines left properly stored not only will last a longtime but also will actually improve over time. The ideal temperature for storing wine is between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit (7 and 18 degrees Celsius). A temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius) is ideal for the proper storage of wine. In France, cool caves are used to store wine for wineries and even some large private collections. This is perfect for both the long-term aging of wine and also the short-term storage of wine. The cooler the storage temperature in the wine cellar the longer the aging process will take while at a mean temperature of 50-57 °F (10-14 °C) wines will age naturally.
