Las Vegas is the most populous city in the state of Nevada. It is a hub for shopping, gambling, and fine dining. Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911, six years after its establishment, and it is located on the arid desert floor of Clark County. Desert vegetation dominates the surrounding environment and torrential flash floods happen sometimes. Mountains surround the city and Las Vegas is just over two thousand feet above sea level. The climate is subtropical and arid, which is no surprise since the city lies in the Mojave Desert. There is year-round sunshine, with the city boasting about three hundred sunny days every year. The summer is hot and winters tend to be short and mild. Snow in the city is rare although it does fall in the surrounding mountains. The hotels and casinos of Las Vegas are a huge part of its economical success and a lot of these are on the Las Vegas Strip. Some of the bigger hotels have thousands of rooms and are attached to massive casinos.
Las Vegas is not just about gambling though, as any wine lover will be pleased to discover. This city is also famed for fine dining so it goes without saying that great wine goes hand in hand with great food and it is not difficult to find. If you prefer to collect wine and let it mature at home before saving it for a special occasion, you will be pleased to know that Las Vegas offers wine cellar possibilities as well as top restaurants and bars. The wine cellar at the Rio Suites hotel is the most famous place to taste and purchase wine in Las Vegas and there are more than fifty thousand bottles there.
