Wine Cork Crafts - How to Reuse Wine Corks

Wine corks are usually thrown away but there are plenty of uses for them. Some bottles of wine come with screw-caps these days but others have corks which you can reuse.

You might like to make fishing accessories, Christmas decorations, wine bottle holders or something else with them. If you have a lot, you can make a bulletin board with them, perhaps using some end-to-end as the border and then arranging them inside. Pin up any important notices or nice greetings cards with thumbtacks.

How to Make Fishing Bobbers with Wine Corks

Drill a hole through the wine cork and then extend some doweling an inch and a half through the cork. Make a notch in the doweling so the fishing line can be secured. This wine cork bobber will function the same way as any other fishing bobber.

Storage for Sharp Items

You can put safety pins, thumbtacks, pins and other sharp items in wine corks. If you have an especially sharp knife or pair of scissors in one of your kitchen drawers, push a wine cork over the sharp end so you do not accidentally cut your fingers when rifling through the drawer, looking for something else.

Alternatively you can glue a row of corks together and cut a notch into one side, to rest a sharp knife in. This is a very practical use for wine corks. High carbon knives have a very sharp edge (which lasts for a long time) but they do discolor easily. Dampen the knife blade and sprinkle it with Comet, then scrub the blade of your high carbon knife using a cork.

Using Them in the Garden

You can use wine corks in the garden too. Cut them in halves and grind them up in a blender or food processor. You can then use them as mulch, adding them to the soil. The purpose of this is for the corks to keep the moisture in the flowerbeds.

You might want to cut your corks into slices instead and stick them underneath your flowerpots. This lifts them off the surfaces, to stop your floors from becoming scratched. What about slicing your corks thinly and sticking them on to your birdhouse? You can paint them in any color you like.

Kid-Friendly Wine Cork Activities

If you are looking for budget activities to enjoy with the kids, what about using wine corks for stamping? You can cut all kinds of designs in the corks and dip them in paint, before making pictures, greetings cards, posters or anything else you like. You can even make the letters of the alphabet if you like (although that means you will need to get through twenty-six bottles of wine beforehand!)

Throw a few corks into your toddler's bath as a free toy or use them for Christmas tree decorations instead. Christmas tree decorations made with wine corks are a good environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic items you can pick up in all the stores during the festive period.

Glue four corks together and stick on some eyes. Use felt pipes for the antlers and draw the red nose on with a marker pen. You can get the kids to help you. Maybe they can think up some new ideas. What about wine cork Santas or snowmen?
