Some Ideas for Beautiful Unique Wine Glasses

Wine glasses come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colors, although most people usually choose traditional ones. If you are keen on wine, have a well-stocked wine cellar and enjoy serving wine to guests, the next thing on your list might well be some unique wine glasses to complete your wine collection.

You can get stemless crystal, shatterproof glasses, hand-painted wine glasses, unusual shaped wine glasses, medieval style goblets, and many more kinds of wine glasses. Whether you are investing in such glasses for yourself or as a gift for somebody else, unique wine glasses can add to the whole wine experience.

Unique wine glasses do not have to be really unusual ones. They might mean choosing one style and collecting a number of red wine glasses and white wine glasses in that particular style. If you are having a dinner party or a similar gathering, it can be nice to use a matching set of wine glasses. You can also get little decorations that you put around the stem of each one, so people do not confuse their wine glass with somebody else's.

Unusual Shaped Wine Glasses

Some wine glasses are not even shaped like glasses. They might be futuristic-looking, shaped like wide tubes or have a tripod-style base instead of a single stem. Wine connoisseurs have set ideas in mind for wine glasses and there are reasons why good wine glasses are shaped the way they are.

For example, red wine glasses are larger and wider than white wine glasses. This is because white wine is more delicate and a smaller, narrower top concentrates the aroma of the wine. Red wine benefits from "breathing" and the larger glass enables this.

Another popular kind is rocking glasses and these feature a curved bottom, which allows the glass to gently rock without being in danger of toppling over. Obviously these are stemless. The function of stems is so you can hold the stem not the bowl. Heat from your hand can warm up the wine and you might not want this to happen.

Colored Wine Glasses

Another type of unique wine glasses is colored glasses but these might not appeal to everyone. Part of the enjoyment of wine is savoring the color, whether that is the straw yellow of a Chardonnay, the pale cream of a Sauvignon Blanc, the vivid red of a Merlot or the rich, deep plum tones of a Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pouring the wine into a colored glass means you will not be able to see the shade properly. Perhaps this makes very little difference to you if you simply want to enjoy the flavor of the wine but professional wine tasters begin by looking at the shade of the wine and they can tell certain things about it depending on the exact shade.

For a compromise, you could decant the wine into a clear glass (or crystal) decanter and then pour it into the colored wine glasses from there. Another compromise would be choosing wine glasses with colored stems but clear bowls, or you could choose wine glasses with colorful hand-painted designs over a clear bowl, then you could see the wine's color but also enjoy the artwork on the unique wine glasses.

There are wine glasses for everybody, whatever your personal taste and budget. If you enjoy wine, you will find that drinking out of beautiful unique wine glasses, chosen by you, really enhances the experience.
